The officer led me and the palace guard away from the crowd where he could speak with us privately.

“You are a private guard of the palace?” he asked.

“I am. General Briggs,” he said introducing himself.

“General?” the officer said, stunned. “The palace sends a general as an escort into the capitol?”

“Officer with respect, the movement of palace officials is scarcely made public. I was here on other business.”

“Of course, general, I apologize.”

I watched the stately officer’s bravado begin to crumble away in the presence the highest-ranking member of the palace military. The officer knew better than to push the matter further.

“I trust you’ll see to this matter then, general?”

“I will. I appreciate your discretion, officer,” Briggs replied with a curt nod and forced smiled.

Before I knew it the general had dragged me away, ending the discussion with the city official.

“You’re hurting me,” I said under my breath.

“And you’re embarrassing me,” he replied. He tucked us into a quiet ally.

“What the fuck was that?” Briggs asked, unceremoniously releasing me against a wall. It hurt.

I stared up at him furiously as I rubbed my sore arm. “What was what?” I spat belligerently.

“Who?” he asked tersely.

“Someone who used to be in the South Wing. Someone who was sent away because of me.”

“Someone framed you?” Briggs asked skeptically. I had no idea if the man believed anything I was saying.

“Yes.” A single tear escaped and raced down my cheek. I wiped it away quickly.

A mixture between a grunt and a sigh escaped him. “I can’t hide this matter from the palace. I can only hope Diana and your King can take pity on you. Who do you belong to?”

Belong. Like I was nothing more than an object to be tucked away and used at will. “Burke,” I breathed.

“Lucky you,” he said under his breath.

What did that mean? Was he being sarcastic?

“Back to the carriages.” Briggs reached again for my arm.

I pulled away sharply before he could get a hold of me. “I can manage without your help.”

“Just walk,” the general said raising his voice.

We walked for several minutes in silence before rounding the final corner to the awaiting carriages. The women and men of the South Wing were already gathered around, climbing in and toting heavy bags beside them.

“Reyah!” Charlotte called out spotting me.

I flattened my lips into a straight line, shooting a quick glance up at the tall man who still walked far too closely behind me. Charlotte sneakily crossed through the crowd and was ushered into the same carriage as I was. When the door was closed, I pushed aside
